Adults can wear polka dots, too!

"Thses are not your grandmother's Polka Dots"

Polka dots is a common pattern that consists of various dots on an item. They do not have to be equal in size or distance from one another and there's no specific number that classifies the item. They most commonly appear on children's clothing but that is changing. Polka dots are currently very in fashion, although many people have a problem. Their problem is they don't know how to make the polka dots work for them. They can make or break an outfit, here's how.

How to:
If you are wearing an item that has polka dots, let it be the center of attention. Pair it with either a plain colored blouse (if it's a skirt for example) or classic blue jeans (if it's a blouse). Don't wear another bold print or else you may just end up looking gaudy. Polka dots shouldn't have to fight for attention, if they are; you're probably sticking out like a sore thumb.
To keep polka dots from looking like vintage wear, add a modern twist. Some peep-toed sandals or a spaghetti strap tank top can make it look fun and new aged. A decorative belt can break up the polka dots on any busy dress or skirt, and layering can dull down the dramatic dots on a busy blouse.

Polka dots and me:
Polka dots are my absolute favorite print. I have a polka dot comforter which I made look classy with plain matching sheet, and the same is done for clothing. I have polka dot shirts with black polka dots that can be paired with a black skirt or slacks and some matching heals or flats to make you look professional and stylish.

Accessorize:
Polka dots can also be an accessory. Scarves have been big recently in fashion as well has jewelry sporting the polka dot print. These can add excitement to a boring outfit, but don't add it to an already busy one. In this case, more is not better, less is better. Use them as a fashion tool.

"The biggest challenge is making them work for you and not letting them control your appearance. Historically they are a vintage item, but times change. Wear your polka dots with pride."

How to Wear Polka Dots in Spring

Polka dots, that beloved print reminiscent of "little girl" pinafores and dresses can be worn by adults, too. Polka dots are once again in fashion for spring and summer (as if it ever was out). Here are some fashion tips to help you wear polka dots like an adult and not a little girl.

Head to Toe Polka Dots is a big No, No
Little girls can pair a polka dot dress with polka dot tights and look adorable. A grown woman cannot. If you have decided to wear polka dots this spring, choose just one polka dot item. If you are choosing to wear a polka dot spring dress, keep your legs bare and choose simple accessories. A polka dot blouse can make a smashing spring outfit when paired with solid colored slacks or shorts. Keep your polka dots to one clothing item and you will be sporting a hot spring fashion trend.

Choose Large Polka Dots
Dotted Swiss was a favorite pattern of mine as a child. Do you remember those teeny, tiny white raised white polka dots on lightweight pastel material? Tiny polka dots look adorable on little girls. Adults should choose bigger, bolder polka dots for a more polished spring look. Tiny polka dots scream little girl and tend to not look flattering on adults. Instead choose the bolder large polka dots and channel this hot spring fashion trend in an adult way.

Choose Bold Polka Dot Colors
Pale pink and white polka dots look charming on children, but may not be the best way for women to wear this spring fashion trend. Instead choose a bold red with white polka dots or electric blue with yellow polka dots. Here is a spring fashion tip: Pastel polka dots are for little girls, but bold bright polka dots are for women. Remember this spring fashion tip and you will look incredible in your polka dot ensemble.

Accessorize with Polka Dots
If a polka dot top or dress is too bold for your spring fashion look, try a polka dot scarf. One of my favorite spring looks is to wear a pair of white shorts with a red and white striped top and a red and white scarf tied around my hair.

Mix Polka Dots with a Different Pattern or Print
Another spring fashion tip is that it is ok to mix different prints. You can wear stripes and polka dots at the same time and look amazing doing so.

If you love polka dots but thought they were just for little girls now you know, Women can wear polka dots and look amazing this spring. My final spring fashion tip is to wear your polka dots with confidence and be the amazing woman that you are.

Why are polka dots so hot in Hollywood?

Being a fashion icon or trendsetter is a lot easier now days than it was back in the 1960s, 70s or 80s. Back in those days fashion was a primary focus, but the norms revolved around what our parents expected or told us to wear.

Now in our rebellious and unique ways of expressing fashion we are always taking a new twist on the clothing that was popular back in the days of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Madonna and the “King of Pop,” Michael Jackson. These are just a few of the fashion icons that inspire some of the Hollywood stars, actresses/actors, models and even “local celebrities” here on campus. We all tend to either imitate or try to set our own trend in our time period with the assistance of people that we look up to or admire for their fashion sense.

This spring is like no other. The one trend that most people thought was done and over is back, looking better than ever. No more dark colors ladies and gentlemen, spring is here and the bright and bold colors of new prints and accessories are first on the list to buy. So, save your pennies and sail out to your local malls, shopping centers or thrift stores to find the latest trend.

This spring, polka dots are so popular and accessible to almost anybody and any budget. You can mix retro with fashion or fun with punk. This spring you will still be looking savvy in your polka dot attire from head to toe. From head bands, scarves, dresses, rain coats, belts and rain boots. As a new season begins and the winter clothing is retired, lighter and brighter clothing and sandals is a must have on the list to being “fashionably correct.” Making an appearance is one thing, but standing out is something we all should be striving for. So, when you’re looking for what’s hot this spring look in stores for the retro, twisted polka dots because they are Hollywood’s best choice.

Most of Hollywood’s “best” are acquiring these looks for spring. People like Penelope Cruz, Sara Jessica Parker, Ashlee Simpson and “American Idol” star Kelly Clarkson are good examples. This look is best when worn during the day as opposed to night and when it is expressed through different avenues of apparel and shoes. Some places you can find these pieces are at Forever 21, Banana Republic, Express, Nordstrom and even Target.
